Some years ago I read that the only thing that distinguishes
man from the lower species is our desire and ability to
adorn ourselves. Actually, it was a humorous greeting card
and it said that what sets us apart is our ability to accessorize!
That notion, coupled with having an artistic Mother who
always said you’re never quite dressed until you put on
your jewelry, probably led me down the path of jewelry design.

I began collecting beads while recovering from an auto
accident in 1992. I was particularly drawn to the history
of beads and the role they have played in different cultures
as a universal expression of religion, economics, politics and
art.

I trained and worked as a weaver for a number of years.
Weaving is grounded in symmetry and my challenge in
designing jewelry, particularly the bracelets, has been to
move away from the symmetrical while creating a balance
that is pleasing to the eye.

I use old and contemporary beads along with sterling silver,
pewter, copper and lampwork in my one-of-a-kind pieces.

By the way, Las Tonterias is Spanish for “Silly Little Things”.

“I have never before written to you for something precious I wanted, but if you are truly my father, get me a fine string full of beads . . . if you have none at hand, dig it out of the ground wherever such things are found and send it to me . . . it should be full of beads and should be beautiful.”
